This Week's Reads

The Sea Witch
by UlaFish (DeviantArt)

Showing some of my Kindle buys this week. Still getting used to grabbing the kindle instead of a physical book but coming along.

Rise of The Sea Witch by Stacey Rourke
**I don't usually read a lot of story based on sea characters but I had to grab this one. First, I love the cover. The colors and image just made me stop and read what the story was about. Second, Ursula is one of my favorite Disney villians ever. So hoping this lives up to the cover and blurb.

Wisteria Witches by Angela Pepper
Wisteria Witches #1 (Goodreads)
** I enjoy reading about witches and this one looked like a fun, humorous , cozy mystery that hits a lot of the plus buttons for me picking up a book.

Dark Heir by Faith Hunter
Jane Yellowrock #9 (Goodreads)
** Really loving this series. It just seems to get better with each book. Add that we seem to have finally moved past Rick and book 8 was probably my favorite so far. Unfortunately, I'm almost caught up on the series and then will have to wait for new books to come out.

Product Review ~ #DarlingVoxBox @Influenster

I received the Darling VoxBox from Influenster (website). Included were free products provided by the companies in exchange for an honest review of their products. I had mixed feelings about this box as a whole. I ended up liking the things I was unsure or unfamiliar with and disliked some items that I thought I would like more.

Nature's Bounty Energy Gummies: Mixed feelings on this one. These gummies are watermelon flavored. I'm not sure if this is the only flavor available but these had a weird aftertaste that I wasn't crazy about. They did seem to work as an energy aid but not sure I'll be able to get past the taste. There were other products listed on the coupon, such as the Probiotic or Multivitamin, that I would be more likely to use.

Country Crock Buttery Spread (free coupon): I grew up with Country Crock. It was the only thing my mother bought. We grabbed the Churn Style spread with our coupon. We gave this a try on some biscuits. While I still like the flavor, I also liked how smooth this spread. It was easy to use and did not rip the bread.
#Country Crock

Duncan Hines Perfect For 1; Chocolate Lovers Cake: This also came with a coupon for a Perfect For 1. I liked the thought of this better than the actual cake. I made sure I followed the directions exactly when trying this. The top inch or so had a weird texture, almost rubbery. The rest of the cake was exactly what I thought it would be. It was very chocolatey and moist. Unfortunately, that top part was the first bite and left a bad impression.

Eva NYC; Therapy Session Hair Mask: This is a conditioning product and can be used states it can be used as either a weekly treatment or as your daily conditioner. I chose to use this as a weekly treatment. First thing I noticed was how shiny it made my hair. It left my hair smooth and strong and will continue to use this product.

No babies in our house but we tried both products. I love the baby powder smell of these items.
Live Clean Tearless Shampoo & Wash: My son said this smelled like vanilla ice cream (gotta love kids). He liked it and said it worked at getting him clean.
Live Clean Baby Gentle Moisture Baby Lotion: I really liked how soft this made my hands when I tried it. I can imagine it would work great for a baby's skin.

Early Review ~ Spectacle

Spectacle (Menagerie #2)

by Rachel Vincent
published by Harlequin MIRA
expected release date: May 30, 2017
genre: Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal

**E-Galley received from publisher and netGalley in exchange for an honest review

Summary (Goodreads): When their coup of Metzger's Menagerie is discovered, Delilah and her fellow cryptids find their newly won freedom brutally stripped away as they are sold into The Savage Spectacle, a private collection of "exotic wildlife." Specializing in ruthless cryptid cage matches, safari-style creature hunts and living party favors, the Spectacle's owner, Willem Vandekamp, caters to the forbidden fetishes of the wealthy and powerful. At the Spectacle, any wish can be granted—for the right price.

But Vandekamp's closely guarded client list isn't the only secret being kept at the Spectacle. Beneath the beauty and brutality of life in the collection lie much darker truths, and no one is more determined than Delilah to strip the masks from the human monsters and drag all dark things into the light.

My Thoughts: I had a hard time reviewing this one. I liked the first one so much and could not wait to read this one. I wanted to know what the menagerie group would do with their freedom and what would cause them to end up at the Spectacle. Unfortunately, that was not to be found. We know from the summary that they get captured but it happened so fast and the reason that "they were found out" was just an excuse to get to the Spectacle.
Delilah is as she was in Menagerie, worried about everyone else and doing everything she can to try and free them all. There is a lot more mental torture in this one based on Vandekamp's technology that leads to many of horrible things that are done to the cryptids.
Speaking of horrible, the things that the clients pay for are as bad as you think they would be. Most you are told or hinted at and are (thankfully) not actually detailed, but some are. We usually just get the aftermath of preparing the cryptids for the next client, party, or sporting event.
Overall, this was a well written book but had too much of the same theme/storyline as book one. I'm not sure how I feel about where Delilah ends up at the end or how she got there. It kind of ruined a relationship that I liked the aspects of in Menagerie. Also, am I the only one that wanted to know what happened to the two little girls in the "secret hallway"? Delilah was the only one that could have remembered them and saved them but she doesn't do this. Are they still there locked in their cages? Will probably read the next book just to see what happens but not as enthusiastically waiting for it.

Rating: 4

This Week's Reads

Black Arts by Faith Hunter
Jane Yellowrock #7 (Goodreads)
**Already started and read. Most of this made it one of my favorites in the series. I liked seeing Jane and Beasts understanding of each other grow. I still don't like Rick and him being in this book did nothing but make Jane's character feel like less than she normally is.

The Librarians and The Lost Lamp by Greg Cox
The Librarians #1 (Goodreads)
**I've really enjoyed this show, just wish the seasons had more episodes. Was curious about these books when I came across them and decided to give the first one a try.

This Week's Reads

White Crystal Dragon
by sandara (DeviantArt)

A Promise Of Fire by Amanda Bouchet
Kingmaker Chronicles #1 (Goodreads)
**I picked up books 1 and 2 from this series. I'm about halfway through A Promise of Fire and am undecided. I like all of the characters except Cat at times. Her inner dialogue seems very childish and does not match her outer self.

Blood Rose Rebellion by Rosalyn Eves
Blood Rose Rebellion #1 (Goodreads)
**I'll admit to being drawn in by this cover more than the story promised. I'm worried that it has too much similar to Gilded Cage but still giving it a try.
