Book Review ~ Lord of The Abyss

Lord of The Abyss (Royal House of Shadows #4)

by Nalini Singh
published by Harlequin Nocturne
Released: November 22, 2011
genre: Adult, Romance, PNR,

**Originally received from NetGalley and publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Summary (Goodreads): Once upon a time…the Blood Sorcerer vanquished the kingdom of Elden. To save their children, the queen scattered them to safety and the king filled them with vengeance. Only a magical timepiece connects the four royal heirs…and time is running out.…

As the dark Lord who condemns souls to damnation in the Abyss, Micah is nothing but a feared monster wrapped in impenetrable black armor. He has no idea he is the last heir of Elden, its last hope. Only one woman knows—the daughter of his enemy.

Liliana is nothing like her father, the Blood Sorcerer who’d cursed Micah. She sees past Micah’s armor to the prince inside. A prince whose sinful touch she craves. But first she has to brave his dark, dangerous lair and help him remember. Because they only have till midnight to save Elden.

***Book 1: Lord of The Vampires by Gena Showalter, Book 2: Lord of Rage by Jill Monroe, Book 3: Lord of The Wolfyn by Jessica Anderson.

My Thoughts: I rated this book based on it being a Harlequin couple book rather than the final book in a PNR/UF series. As a couple book I really liked and enjoyed Lily and Micah's story. I'll get into why this didn't work as a final in a series book later.
We start with the last and youngest of the King and Queen's children. Micah was sent to the abyss where he was kept in a kind of sleep/stasis until he was old enough to learn how to be the Lord of The Abyss.
Lily grew up with her father, the Blood Sorcerer, and though her mother was around she didn't know she was Lily's mother. We find out how horrible her younger years were and the things that her father did to try and break her and bring her more fully to his side. Instead she endured the beatings and other things and when she was able ran away to try and find the last one needed to defeat her father.
Due to the way both Lily and Micah were raised there was a very naive innocence to them at times and no real social skills. At one point this did cause me to pause during one of the couple parts because the way it was worded sound more childish than naive. Luckily it was just one line/part in one scene but still gave me pause.
Throughout their story I kept waiting for them to start on their way back Elden to meet up with the other three siblings and spouses to face off with the Blood Sorcerer. This is the part that did not work for me. We spent 3 3/4 books hearing about how horrible and powerful this man is and when Micah and Lily finally make it to Elden it takes them longer to cross the moat with people eating fish than it did to finish off the Blood Sorcerer. Not only was he dead within a couple of sentences it took only one person to kill him. None of the other siblings or their spouses were even needed to defeat this all powerful man that we had been lead to believe was so powerful he destroyed the King and Queen and decimated their kingdom.
As I said this completely worked as a couple book. Watching Lily and Micah grow both as people and as a couple learning how to love someone for the first time was done very well in this book. For me, this series should have been five books, four for the couples and then a final to have them all come together to save their kingdom and defeat the Blood Sorcerer.

Rating: 4 (based only on it as a couple book)

Book Review ~ The Beast

The Beast (Black Dagger Brotherhood #14 )

by J.R. Ward
published by NAL
genre: Adult, Urban Fantasy, PNR,

Summary (Goodreads): Nothing is as it used to be for the Black Dagger Brotherhood. After avoiding war with the Shadows, alliances have shifted and lines have been drawn. The slayers of the Lessening Society are stronger than ever, preying on human weakness to acquire more money, more weapons, more power. But as the Brotherhood readies for an all-out attack on them, one of their own fights a battle within himself…

For Rhage, the Brother with the biggest appetites, but also the biggest heart, life was supposed to be perfect—or at the very least, perfectly enjoyable. Mary, his beloved shellan, is by his side and his King and his brothers are thriving. But Rhage can’t understand—or control—the panic and insecurity that plague him…
And that terrifies him—as well as distances him from his mate. After suffering mortal injury in battle, Rhage must reassess his priorities—and the answer, when it comes to him, rocks his world...and Mary’s. But Mary is on a journey of her own, one that will either bring them closer together or cause a split that neither will recover from...

**I tried to come up with a review that did not include any spoilers but really couldn't. There may be some things given away below from this or previous books.

My Thoughts:  I haven't read these books in order since the first 6-7. Some I just was not interested in and others I just haven't gotten around to. I read the Shadows but not the King so there may be some things I've missed.
With the length of these books being so long I think I'm going to break my thoughts down by person/couples/family.
Rhage, Mary, Bitsy: I like Rhage but don't love him like most. He is the most romantic out of all the brothers but I found it annoying at times. This may be more the slang the author uses rather than the character. As far as him and Mary, I came away from the book just thinking their story was nice or sweet. It felt kind of bland to me. Throw in the newly orphaned child and you have an insta family. Bitsy sudden change from quiet speaking to no one to outgoing happy child was way too fast for me. As the main story for the book, like I said, it was nice and seemed to come together in the end.
Xcor, Layla: The couple for the next book The Chosen. I will either be skipping this one and reading the spoilers or waiting until a bunch of the review come out. Layla is one of my least favorite people in this series. She has been since she first showed up and she hasn't done a lot to change my feelings. Unfortunately, I like Xcor, but don't see how he can redeem himself to make this coupling acceptable to everyone else. If it ends up being just who he's related to, it won't work for me. At the same time, I want to see him and the rest of the BoB teaming up with the Brothers.
Assail, his Cousins, Markus: There's something about Assail that I like even though I know I shouldn't. I felt his story moved further along in the book than anyone else's. There were still moments that were questionable. I don't know what happened in the last book but I didn't really understand how he could do somethings that he did if he is bonded (?not sure if he is?) with another female. I'm also not sure how I feel about him and Markus, he just seemed to latch onto him awfully quick. I hope Ward uses Markus as something more than Zsadist 2.0.
Vishous and family: Not sure what was up with V in this one. He just seemed off. I've never been a fan of him and Jane but having him say that their relationship is clinical (or something similar) was not normal behavior. I also don't understand how the Scribe Virgin can just leave. This was not explained well enough for me. She is the creator of the race, how does she just go and appoint a successor at a later date? Another thing I need more info on. Lastly, is the Omega. I want more of him. The lessers have become a joke lately. They are not believable as bad guys and sending the guys out to fight them just feels like busy work. One of my favorite moments in this books was when the Omega showed up in the field where some of the brothers were. You could feel the tension and fear from V while he was trying to keep and him and his Brothers hidden. This is what I want in villain.
Overall, it was a good book. I came away with the feeling that it was a "nice" story which is probably not what you want to feel after reading a Ward book. While I want to know what happens next I just don't know if I can bring myself to read a full book about Layla and her dramas.

mini Reviews ~ Night Shift

Night Shift
by Nalini Singh, Ilona Andrews, Lisa Shearin, Milla Vane
published by Berkley
Genre: Adult, Anthology, UF, PNR, Supernatural, Shifters

Summary (Goodreads): New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh delivers a smoldering story with Secrets at Midnight , as the scent of Bastien Smith’s elusive lover ignites a possessiveness in him that’s as feral as it is ecstatic. And now that he’s found his mate, he’ll do anything to keep her.

In #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews’ novella, Magic Steals , when people start going missing, shapeshifting tigress Dali Harimau and jaguar shifter Jim Shrapshire must uncover the truth about the mysterious creatures responsible.

From Milla Vane—a warrior princess must tame The Beast of Blackmoor to earn a place among her people. But she quickly discovers that the beast isn't a monster, but a barbarian warrior who intends to do some taming himself.

It’s seer Makenna Frazier's first day on the job at Supernatural Protection and Investigations, and her first assignment is more than she bargained for when bodyguard duty for a leprechaun prince’s bachelor party goes every which way but right in national bestselling author Lisa Shearin’s Lucky Charms

My Thoughts:
Secrets at Midnight / Nalini Singh (Psy-Changling 12.5): I have only read 1 of the books from this series. I remember liking it so not sure why I haven't read more. This is a definite PNR story. It's all about Bastien finding his mate Kirby. Once he's found her it moves right into HEA territory. I did like what we got of Kirby's backstory and why she was repressing her other half. I didn't hate or love this story. It was cute.
Magic Steals / Ilona Andrewa (Kate Daniels 6.5): This is another series that I've only read short stories from even though I own the first couple of books. I didn't like this as a PNR story. I was ok with Dali being insecure and not feeling she is as good as other bad ass women in this series. What I didn't like was how immature she was. Things like hiding Jim in her closest because her mother showed up at her place. I was reading it going "Really". I did like mystery/story that took place. This was where Dali shined and she became more likable.
The Beast of Blackmoor / Milla Vane: Not Read, ran out of time before had to return to library.
Lucky Charms / Lisa Shearin (SPI Files 0.5): This was my favorite of the bunch. The author did a good job of introducing her new world and characters in a short amount of time. We find out about SPI, meet some crazy leprechauns, and learn Makenna's new dream job may not be as great as she thinks, even with the health benefits. There is something for everyone if you like the supernatural. From the Russian werewolf to the boss lady who's a real dragon.
Having read book 1 right after this, I will say I hope the author gets back to the things that were set up in this story. Other groups trying to get their hands on the Seer so they have the advantage, etc.

Rating: 4 This is an overall rating for the anthology as a whole.

Book Review (or a ramble) ~ The Shadows

The Shadows (Black Dagger Brotherhood #13)

by J.R. Ward
published by Penguin
Genre: Adult, PNR, Paranormal

Summary (Goodreads): Two brothers bound by more than blood fight to change a brutal destiny in the heart-wrenching new novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood by #1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward.

Trez “Latimer” doesn’t really exist. And not just because the identity was created so that a Shadow could function in the underbelly of the human world. Sold by his parents to the Queen of the S’Hsibe as a child, Trez escaped the Territory and has been a pimp and an enforcer in Caldwell, NY for years- all the while on the run from a destiny of sexual servitude. He’s never had anyone he could totally rely on... except for his brother, iAm.

iAm’s sole goal has always been to keep his brother from self-destructing- and he knows he’s failed. It’s not until the Chosen Serena enters Trez’s life that the male begins to turn things around... but by then it’s too late. The pledge to mate the Queen’s daughter comes due and there is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and no negotiating.

Trapped between his heart and a fate he never volunteered for, Trez must decide whether to endanger himself and others- or forever leave behind the female he’s in love with. But then an unimaginable tragedy strikes and changes everything. Staring out over an emotional abyss, Trez must find a reason to go on or risk losing himself and his soul forever. And iAm, in the name of brotherly love, is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice...

My Thoughts: I haven't been consistent in reading this series. After the first 5-6 I have started to just read the ones that focus on a character that I am interested in. Then even when I'm interested I still skip a lot of the secondary stories that are setting up future books. Going to start with those side stories.
I know I may be in the minority but I am not interested in Xcor and Layla. Many were wanting them as the next book and I'm glad they are not. I haven't liked Layla since she first showed up in this series and she hasn't done anything to make me change my mind. It kind of sucks because I like Xcor and the Bastards but since all their story has Layla in it I skimmed/skipped all the pages devoted to them.
Assail, is there a point to this character. I did not find anything redeeming about him. He spent most of what I read sniffing drugs up his nose. Even when he was trying to correct things with the brother I wasn't buying it. Just seems like a liability and one that may not last long if he doesn't change soon.
Paradise. I was hoping for better. She is the first main character in Ward's new Brotherhood Legacy series that focuses on the new training program. When I read the blurb for Blood Kiss (Goodreads) I was interested. Unfortunately, this character was boring. I get the trying to go for a strong female who is trying to break out of the old ways. The problem was the trying, that's what it felt like. I'm hoping Butch's story and maybe other new characters can carry this book better than she can.
Iam, Trez's brother. I know this is called The Shadows but the book was really about Trez and Selena with very little page time to Iam and Catra. I liked them as a couple even if it was expected. They worked well and could have been a great couple if they were fleshed out more.
Trez and Selena. I went into this book knowing that many, many people were unhappy with it so I wasn't surprised by the ending even without specific on why they were unhappy. This was a well written story for this couple. There were many great scenes, including Trez riding the roller coaster 4 times even though he hates them and when all the women get together to dress Selena. Xhex made that whole scene.
The one thing that did not work was the ending. I wasn't upset or emotional as everyone else but I understood completely. This series is marketed as Paranormal Romance (PNR). There are certain rules when it comes to romance books. Number one being your main character gets an HEA/HFN in that book. It didn't happen here with Trez/Selena and since they had the majority of page time, they are the ones you were expecting to get an HEA.
The next book is about Rhage and Mary called The Beast. I've always like Rhage so I'll probably be reading it. I also read many good things about the previous book The King that makes me think I'll try to fit it into my reading schedule at some point.

Book Review ~ Dead Heat

Dead Heat (Alpha & Omega #4)

by Patricia Briggs
published by Ace
Genre: Adult, PNR, Fantasy, Shifters, Supernatural,

Summary (Goodreads): For once, mated werewolves Charles and Anna are not traveling because of Charles’s role as his father’s enforcer. This time, their trip to Arizona is purely personal, as Charles plans to buy Anna a horse for her birthday. Or at least it starts out that way...

Charles and Anna soon discover that a dangerous Fae being is on the loose, replacing human children with simulacrums. The Fae’s cold war with humanity is about to heat up—and Charles and Anna are in the cross fire.

My Thoughts: It's saying something that the author got me to tear up over a side character that we just met in this book. This has been one of my favorite series since they started and this story was a great addition to the set.
Anna grew on me more in this story. She was still the same Omega, doing what she needed to do to help. It seemed more fluid, to me, rather than just a defiance thing. My favorite thing about this story was learning more about Charles' past. It humanized him in a way that we haven't gotten in previous books. Learning that he had actual friends and almost another family outside of his father and brother.
I also got the one thing I wanted more of from the previous book, the FBI and Cantrip agents. I'm not sure how they can be kept in future books but I would definitely like them to be. This goes along with the fae making it clear that they are following their own rules and choices are going to have to be made.
The only thing that kept pulling me slightly out of the book was all the horse trivia. I very much felt like Anna and could not understand half of what was being said. That said, there were some great horses with great personalities that added to the overall plot.
*On a side note. I finished Vision in Silver by Anne Bishop just before this and really noticed (and loved) the difference in the authors' worlds. We have a story in this book (Dead Heat) about a werewolf who stays in his wolf form for months and the author makes a point of stating this is not good in her world. Where as in ViS the wolfs cannot stand to be in human form for even a full day at times. I always like when the authors lay down the rules for the supernatural/magic in their world and then stick to it.

Book Review ~ Wild Things

Wild Things (Chicagoland Vampires #9)

by Chloe Neill
published by NAL Trade
genre: Adult, Urban Fantasy, PNR, Supernatural

Summary: (Goodreads): Since Merit was turned into a vampire, and the protector of Chicago’s Cadogan House, it’s been a wild ride. She and Master vampire Ethan Sullivan have helped make Cadogan’s vampires the strongest in North America, and forged ties with paranormal folk of all breeds and creeds, living or dead…or both.

But now those alliances are about to be tested. A strange and twisted magic has ripped through the North American Central Pack, and Merit’s closest friends are caught in the crosshairs. Gabriel Keene, the Pack Apex, looks to Merit and Ethan for help. But who—or what—could possibly be powerful enough to out-magic a shifter?

Merit is about to go toe to toe, and cold steel to cold heart, to find out.

My Thoughts: Another enjoyable installment in the Chicagoland series. I probably liked this book for all the wrong reasons. Since he first showed up Gabriel has been my favorite character in these books. I really want a book from his POV circling around the supes.
Ethan and Merit are laying low (hiding from mayor) with the supes. During an annual festival things get a little out of hand. We find out about other types of supernaturals "living" in the world besides the ones already out. In the aftermath it is discovered that someone is kidnapping supernaturals. In order to get out of trouble with the elves Merit and Co. have to find the missing and return them to their families.
The story line with the mayor seemed to resolve too easily. I also didn't like that it happened off page. The story went from A to C without showing anything between.
The rest felt like a transition type book. With decisions being made regarding Chicago, GP, and the future it set up for some possibly interesting stories.

Book Review ~ Disenchanted & Co.

His Lordship Possessed (Disenchanted & Co. #1, part 2)

by Lynn Viehl
published by Pocket
genre: Adult, Steampunk, Fantasy, PNR

**EGalley received from netGalley and Publisher
***Review for part 1 can be found (here).

Summary (Goodreads): The second half of Disenchanted & Co.—the thrilling conclusion. In a steampunk version of America that lost the Revolutionary War, Charmian (Kit) Kittredge makes her living investigating magic crimes and exposing the frauds behind them. While Kit tries to avoid the nobs of high society, as the proprietor of Disenchanted & Co. she follows mysteries wherever they lead.

Lady Diana Walsh calls on Kit to investigate and dispel the curse she believes responsible for carving hateful words into her own flesh as she sleeps. While Kit doesn’t believe in magic herself, she can’t refuse to help a woman subjected nightly to such vicious assaults. As Kit investigates the Walsh family, she becomes convinced that the attacks on Diana are part of a larger, more ominous plot—one that may involve the lady’s obnoxious husband.

Sleuthing in the city of Rumsen is difficult enough, but soon Kit must also skirt the unwanted attentions of nefarious deathmage Lucien Dredmore and the unwelcome scrutiny of police Chief Inspector Thomas Doyle. Unwilling to surrender to either man’s passion for her, Kit struggles to remain independent as she draws closer to the heart of the mystery. Yet as she learns the truth behind her ladyship’s curse, Kit also uncovers a massive conspiracy that promises to ruin her life—and turn Rumsen into a supernatural battleground from which no one will escape alive.

My Thoughts: I'll start by saying I have found I don't like reading books broken into parts. Especially when I have a long wait between the readings. I didn't enjoy part 2 as much as part 1. Where the first seemed to flow and read as a cohesive story. This second part seemed to jump all over the place. We go from a sorta steampunk victorian like city to a world where two groups of ancient mythological beings, who want to go to war, taking over the land and the people. Throw in some time travel and eventually it gets back to where the book started.
Overall, I don't know if this had been better if I had read both parts at the same time. The beginning and the end were a promising start to what could be a good series. Unfortunately the middle section kind of got muddled and seemed to go off track. I did like that at least for this story the author did not have a love triangle between Kit, Dredmore, and Doyle. There was enough between Kit and Dredmore that it did not need anything else thrown at it.

Rating: 3.5, Overall for Disenchanted & Co: 4

Book Review ~ Twice Bitten

Twice Bitten (Chicagoland Vampires #3)

by Chloe Neill
published by Penguin Group
genre: Adult, PNR, Urban Fantasy, Supernatural

Summary (Goodreads): Merit, Chicago’s newest vampire, is learning how to play well with others. Other supernaturals, that is. Shapeshifters from across the country are convening in the Windy City, and as a gesture of peace, Master Vampire Ethan Sullivan has offered their leader a very special bodyguard: Merit. Merit is supposed to protect the Alpha, Gabriel Keene—and to spy for the vamps while she’s at it. Oh, and luckily Ethan’s offering some steamy, one-on-one combat training sessions to help her prepare for the mission.

Merit must accept the assignment, even though she knows that she’ll probably regret it. And she’s not wrong. Someone is gunning for Gabriel Keene, and Merit soon finds herself in the line of fire. She’ll need all the help she can get to track down the would-be assassin, but everywhere she turns, there are rising tensions between supernaturals—not least between her and a certain green-eyed, centuries old master vampire.

My Thoughts: This might be my favorite so far. Liked the addition of the shifters and the fact that it wasn't another round of Celina and a traitor in the house.
We finally get some real Merit and Ethan action, unfortunately it doesn't last nearly long enough. There is something about these two on the page, whether working, fighting, or just making everyone frustrated that works and makes you want more. Even when I want to kick Ethan he is quickly moving up the ranks as a favorite vamp character.
I liked the dynamics of the packs. They are such a 180 from the vampires that it was easier to enjoy and want to be on their side. That said the whole "traitor" thing didn't make sense considering how power is passed down. It served the purpose of the final set up but would have liked it to make more sense.
Overall, really enjoying this series. There are a ton of great side characters that can easily steal a page or two. Don't know why I waited so long to read this series but I'm looking forward to reading more. Book 10 just came out so plenty to catch up on.

Mini Reviews ~ Blood Lite

Blood Lite (Blood Lite #1)

edited by Kevin J Anderson
genre: Anthologies, Adult, Fantasy, PNR, UF

Summary (Goodreads): The Horror Writers Association Presents Blood Lite...a collection of entertaining tales that puts the fun back into dark fiction, with ironic twists and tongue-in-cheek wit to temper the jagged edge.

My Thoughts: I only read the stories by the authors on the front of the book. I tried reading some of the others but wasn't in the right mood, will try and go back when I have more reading time.
Jim Butcher (Dresden 10.1): Harry's Day Off: Cute story about Harry trying to keep plans for a day off and everything going wrong. From his assistant blowing up his lab to the local were's getting fleas.
Sherrilyn Kenyon (Dark Hunter 15.5): Where Angels Fear to Tread: This was the one that had me turning the page and going wait I want more.
Kelley Armstrong (Otherworld 8.2): The Ungrateful Dead: This was another I enjoyed even though I'm not this far into the series yet (really need to finish).
Overall, I bought this for these three stories and they were worth the price of the book. Since I own the book, if I'm ever looking for new authors I can check out their works in this book.

Book Review ~ Night Broken

Night Broken (Mercy Thompson #8)

by Patricia Briggs
published by Ace
genre: Adult, UF, PNR

Summary (Goodreads): An unexpected phone call heralds a new challenge for Mercy. Her mate Adam’s ex-wife is in trouble, on the run from her new boyfriend. Adam isn’t the kind of man to turn away a person in need—and Mercy knows it. But with Christy holed up in Adam’s house, Mercy can’t shake the feeling that something about the situation isn’t right.

Soon, her suspicions are confirmed when she learns that Christy has the farthest thing from good intentions. She wants Adam back and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen, including turning Adam’s pack against Mercy.

Mercy isn’t about to step down without a fight, but there’s a more dangerous threat circling. Christy’s ex is more than a bad man—in fact, he may not be human at all. As the bodies start piling up, Mercy must put her personal troubles aside to face a creature with the power to tear her whole world apart.

My Thoughts:  While there may have been some things I did not like, overall this was a great read for me. I had to keep reading until the end and when it was finished I wanted more.
I'll start with Christy. Can't say I liked her (I know I'm not supposed to). I could understand how/why some in the pack could have felt close to her because she was married to their alpha. What I could not understand was how they would still feel that way after what she did to Adam and Jesse. It just felt off to me. I'm also not sure how I feel about her staying in town.
The twist with the stalker was interesting and delved into areas/cultures that I am not familiar with. I liked how Mercy's circle is expanding and her heritage is being used more and more. She seems more willing to learn from the things that Coyote does than her half brother is. It may seem off at the time but it usually leads to something that helps.
We also had some old regulars return. Waiting for to see how Tad's help comes back to haunt him in future books (it's already started to). Also, the link between Mercy and Stefan. How does a walking stick become one of the best side characters, or at least one of my favorites.
Overall, this was a favorite read for me so far this year. It kept me entertained and reading right until the end. Is it time for the next book yet?

Book Review ~ Circle of Desire

Circle of Desire (Damask Circle #3)

by Keri Arthur
published by Dell
genre: Adult, PNR, Urban Fantasy,

**Received e-arc from netGalley/publisher in exchange for honest review

Summary (Goodreads): A TEMPTING FATE
Two children have been found dead, their souls torn from their bodies. Two more are missing, and Ethan Morgan’s niece is one of them. A dedicated cop, Ethan has every intention not only of bringing her back alive but of catching the monster behind these kidnappings. And he will use anyone and everyone to achieve those aims—even a crazy woman who claims to be a witch. But time is ticking. The victims rarely stay alive for more than seven days. Four of those days have already passed.

In ten years of working for the Damask Circle, shapeshifter Katherine Tanner has never come across anything that goes after kids the way this monster does. The last thing Kat needs is interference from a cop who has no idea what he’s up against. But the greatest threat to Kat may come not from the forces of darkness, but from the man she is beginning to love. Because Ethan is a werewolf... and the full moon is rising.

My Thoughts: For some reason this felt more like a part of a series rather than a stand alone.  It may be because Kat works as team with her Grandmother so it was not just the HEA couple vs the bad guys.
Ethan is my new book pet peeve. He is a werewolf but is completely surprised that there are vampires, psychics, demons, etc that exist in the world. I just don't get this character trait and find I want to bang my head on something when they just deny, deny, deny. Even after he had seen Kat's grandmother do a seeing to try and find out more about the missing children he didn't believe. When Kat shifted into her other form right in front of him you could tell he still wanted to deny it.
I liked Kat, thought she was probably the strongest female lead from this series. At least on most things. She was very sure of herself when it came to going after bad guys and being Ethan's partner for rising moon. The only thing I didn't like about her was the I'm going to change him attitude, she knew best and it didn't matter Ethan's reasons, things were going to end up how she wanted. There was another part to this that really took it to another level and even though it wasn't done on purpose I didn't like that part of the story/relationship.
Overall, I've enjoyed reading Keri Arthur's books and while not my favorites of hers, I don't feel like I wasted my time. As of now this is the last book in this re-released series. I would not mind more of them if they had more of a series feel with carry over characters in each book.

Book Review ~ Circle of Fire

Circle of Fire (Damask Circle #1)

by Keri Arthur
published by Dell
genre: Adult, Fantasy, PNR

Summary (Goodreads): Sixteen teenagers taken from their homes. Eleven bodies recovered, each completely drained of blood. Some believe vampires are responsible. Jon Barnett knows that what’s happening is far worse. Sent by a group of paranormal investigators known as the Damask Circle, Jon quickly becomes enmeshed in a web of black magic and realizes he needs help. But fate gives him only one choice.

Madeline Smith has retreated to an isolated farmhouse, afraid of the abilities she cannot control—abilities that have killed. But when a “ghost” brings a warning of danger and her nephew goes missing, Maddie not only has to leave her haven, she has to place her trust in a man who is neither ghost nor human. As the noose of sorcery tightens, the search for the teenagers becomes a race against time. But the greatest danger to Maddie and Jon could be the intense feelings they refuse to acknowledge but cannot ignore.

My Thoughts: I had already read book 2 when I started Circle of Fire. I was expecting certain things, like more info on The Damask Circle, that did not happen. These definitely feel like stand alone books. While one of the leads happens to be part of the Circle, I have not seen any crossover of characters or even mention of others besides the Head of the Circle.
This felt more like being told it is a paranormal book than actually feeling like one. There were parts, like Jon being a shifter and Maddie having some sort of sight, that were used when convenient to the story but really played a backseat. I liked both characters but didn't find myself caring about their HEA as much as I should have.
Luckily there was the story of the missing kids and the evil that has taken them. I found the hotel guy creepier than the actual bad guy. He may have been the evil sidekick but he seemed to play a bigger part in the story.
Overall, I was glad I had read book 2 already. I would still have wanted to read more but would not have been as quick to search it out.

Book Review ~ Cold Iron

Cold Iron (Cold Iron #1)

by D.L. McDermott
published by Pocket Star
genre: Adult, Fae, PNR

**eGalley received from netGalley/publisher in exchange for honest review.

Summary (Goodreads): The Fae, the Good Neighbors, the Fair Folk, the Aes Sídhe, creatures of preternatural beauty and seduction. Archaeologist Beth Carter doesn’t believe in them. She’s always credited her extraordinary ability to identify ancient Celtic sites to hard work and intuition—until she discovers a tomb filled with ancient treasure but missing a body. Her ex-husband, the scholar who stifled her career to advance his own, is unconcerned. Corpses don’t fetch much on the antiquities market. Gold does. Beth knows from past experience that if she isn’t vigilant, Frank will make off with the hoard.

So when a man—tall, broad shouldered, and impossibly handsome—turns up in her bedroom claiming to be the tomb’s inhabitant, one of mythic god-kings of old Ireland, Beth believes it is a ploy cooked up by her ex-husband to scare her away from the excavation.

But Conn is all too real. Ancient, alien, irresistible, the Fae are the stuff of dreams and nightmares, their attentions so addictive their abandoned human lovers wither and die. And this one has fixed his supernatural desire on Beth.

My Thoughts: I had a hard time rating this one. I really liked the modern day setting mixed with old world superstitions.
The problem came with Conn. When we first are introduced to him you really get the feeling that he is fae. Once he meets Beth everything that makes him fae disappears and he is just a lovesick guy. I still liked their story but it felt too quick and he lost some of himself.
Beth is a broken character that is starting to find her way as well as finding out who she really is. She embraces her heritage even though it could ruin her relationship with Conn and put a target on her back from the rest of his kind.
The rest of the characters really made this story and helped it keep it's fantasy feel. You got a definite Fae feel whenever Miach or The Prince were involved. Miach felt the most real. While he has some sensibilities from living among humans for so long, he still falls back on his basic Fae characteristics when the need calls for it.
Overall, I liked the world the author created I just wish Conn had stayed more true to his character during the process of falling for Beth. Miach was my favorite character and I'm looking forward to the next story in this series since he is one of the main characters.

Book Review ~ Circle of Death

Circle of Death (Damask Circle #2)

by Keri Arthur
published by Dell
expected release date: February 25, 2014
genre: Adult, Fantasy, Supernatural, PNR

**eGalley received from netGalley/publisher in exchange for an honest review

Summary (Goodreads): PASSION REBORN

In one vicious night, Kirby Brown’s world is torn apart. Her best friend is dead, killed by a madman who is now after Kirby, and she has no idea why. When the police prove incapable of protecting Kirby, she has no choice but to trust a mysterious stranger. And while she finds herself inexplicably drawn to him, she fears the strange abilities he wields.

An investigator for the Damask Circle, Doyle Fitzgerald, has come to Melbourne, Australia, to hunt down a killer. What he doesn’t expect to find is a cadre of witches capable of controlling the elements, a sorceress determined to take that power for herself, and a broken woman who is more than she seems. Doyle is certain that the reason behind the bloodshed lies in Kirby’s past—a past she has no wish to remember. Because Doyle isn’t the only one with magic in his soul: Kirby’s special gifts have the strength to destroy the world.

My Thoughts: I have not read the first book in this series. Other than not being familiar with the group in the circle, this did not hinder my reading or enjoyment of this book.
The action starts right from the start and just keeps going. At first I wasn't sure about Kirby. The consistency of her character was off for me. While she was the strong female lead you would want and need to be paired with Doyle. Her inability to trust (even though she couldn't tell you why) just dragged out too long. There were times when I just wanted to say that's enough of that same dialogue can we move this forward. Still overall, she worked in the long run, just the small things.
Loved Doyle and his team. Even if the book had just focused on the three of them and catching this killer I would have been happy. I didn't need the HEA to enjoy this story.
Overall, once I started reading I could not put this down. I had to know what happened next and how much trouble Kirby was going to cause for Doyle and if they stood a chance against this killer when they hadn't up to that point. The end went the usual HEA route that you would expect but was still well done.
I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the first book to understand the circle more and have already been approved for the third book Circle of Desire.

Review ~ The Dark-Hunters, Vol. 1

The Dark-Hunters, Vol. 1 (Dark Hunter Manga #1)

by Sherrilyn Kenyon, Joshua Hale Fialkov
art by Claudia Campos, Bill Tortolini
genre, Manga, graphic novel, Fantasy, PNR,

Summary (Goodreads): In the war against vampires, mankind has only one hope: The Dark-Hunters. Ancient warriors who died of brutal betrayal, the Dark-Hunters have sworn themselves into the service of the goddess Artemis to protect us.
It's a pact with pretty good perks. Immortality, power, psychic abilities, wealth and a cool wardrobe. But it comes with a few drawbacks: fatal sun poisoning and a new, irreparable dental problem. But aside from the fangs and nocturnal lifestyle, it's not so bad.
Until Kyrian meets the most frightening thing imaginable. An accountant who's being hunted by one of the most lethal vampires out there. If Amanda Devereaux goes down, so does he and no offense, he doesn't want to die (hence the whole immortality thing). And he doesn't want humanity dead either which is a good thing for us since he and Amanda are all that stands between us and oblivion. Lets hope they win.
From the wild imagination of Sherrilyn Kenyon comes the humorous and suspenseful manga debut of the #1 internationally bestselling Dark-Hunter series. The world of manga will never be the same again.

My Thoughts: I'll start by saying this is the first time I have read anything in the manga style. It did not take me as long as I thought it would to get used to the right to left reading.
This is one of my favorite series and it was nice to revisit some of the older characters. I did find that this was more dialogue heavy than other graphic novels I have been reading. It read very close to the actual novel (which is split into the first 2 volumes).
The only problem I really had were some drawings of Amanda. Unlike the rest of the characters, at times she felt like a very flat character. Without all the dialogue it would have been hard to read what her character was feeling/thinking.
Overall, I missed having some of the full color pics but it was still well done and  I will be reading volume 2.

Book Review ~ Dark Witch

Dark Witch (The Cousins O'Dwyer Trilogy #1)

by Nora Roberts
published by Berkley
genre: Adult, PNR, Fantasy, Romance

Summary (Goodreads):With indifferent parents, Iona Sheehan grew up craving devotion and acceptance. From her maternal grandmother, she learned where to find both: a land of lush forests, dazzling lakes, and centuries-old legends.
Ireland.
County Mayo, to be exact. Where her ancestors’ blood and magic have flowed through generations—and where her destiny awaits.

Iona arrives in Ireland with nothing but her Nan’s directions, an unfailingly optimistic attitude, and an innate talent with horses. Not far from the luxurious castle where she is spending a week, she finds her cousins, Branna and Connor O’Dwyer. And since family is family, they invite her into their home and their lives.

When Iona lands a job at the local stables, she meets the owner, Boyle McGrath. Cowboy, pirate, wild tribal horsemen, he’s three of her biggest fantasy weaknesses all in one big, bold package.

Iona realizes that here she can make a home for herself—and live her life as she wants, even if that means falling head over heels for Boyle. But nothing is as it seems. An ancient evil has wound its way around Iona’s family tree and must be defeated. Family and friends will fight with each other and for each other to keep the promise of hope—and love—alive…

My Thoughts: I was glad when I saw that Nora Roberts was releasing another paranormal series. She is one of the few contemporary romance authors I'll read but I enjoy these types of stories more. Another plus is the setting. I love books set in Ireland.
Part of me wished that we had spent more time with the original children of the Dark Witch. I was more engrossed in their story than the current day story at times.
The only real downfall for me was Iona. For some reason, I just didn't like her. Every other character including Boyle, I loved but just couldn't get behind her. I didn't hate her, just didn't care most of the time. This didn't stop me liking her story and rooting for her to come out on top against the big bad.
Overall, this book had what you would expect including the obligatory bump in the road for the main couple before they get their HEA. With the Good vs Evil, romance, great setting and characters to come I'm looking forward to the next two books.

Book Review ~ Touch of Power

Touch of Power (Healer #1)

by Maria V Snyder
published by Mira
genre: Fantasy, PNR, Zombies

Summary (Goodreads): Laying hands upon the injured and dying, Avry of Kazan assumes their wounds and diseases into herself. But rather than being honored for her skills, she is hunted. Healers like Avry are accused of spreading the plague that has decimated the Territories, leaving the survivors in a state of chaos.

Stressed and tired from hiding, Avry is abducted by a band of rogues who, shockingly, value her gift above the golden bounty offered for her capture. Their leader, an enigmatic captor-protector with powers of his own, is unequivocal in his demands: Avry must heal a plague-stricken prince—leader of a campaign against her people. As they traverse the daunting Nine Mountains, beset by mercenaries and magical dangers, Avry must decide who is worth healing and what is worth dying for. Because the price of peace may well be her life..

My Thoughts: Another great start to a series by one of my favorite authors. I was completely sucked in right from the beginning.
This was a world that you could get lost in, even if it wasn't a very nice world. People are just trying to pick up the pieces and survive after a plague has ravaged the land. The different lands were filled with every type of character and while you may not have liked some (the scared that turn in someone who just helped them) you understood them.
Avry and her magic are the most hated by the people but most wanted by the leaders. I loved how strong she was when she knew the decision she was making could kill her. The most important thing to her was that she make the choice not have someone else make it for her.
Kerrick and the rest of the group, that help Avry escape just to kidnap her, could have been very easy to hate but you couldn't help but have a soft spot for them by the end. Kerrick was the worst offender but I really ended up liking how his relationship with Avry grew. By the end of the book them as a couple worked where if it had been forced any earlier it would not have been believable.
Overall, this was another reminder why I love reading this author. I have read most of her books multiple times and this will be added to that list.

Book Review ~ The Kingdom

The Kingdom (Graveyard Queen #2)

by Amanda Stevens
published by Mira
genre: Adult, Paranormal, PNR,

Summary (Goodreads): Deep in the shadowy foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains lies a dying town

My name is Amelia Gray. They call me The Graveyard Queen. I've been commissioned to restore an old cemetery in Asher Falls, South Carolina, but I'm coming to think I have another purpose here.

Why is there a cemetery at the bottom of Bell Lake? Why am I drawn time and again to a hidden grave I've discovered in the woods? Something is eating away at the soul of this town - this withering kingdom - and it will only be restored if I can uncover the truth.

My Thoughts: I've really enjoyed the  first two books of this series. It's got that spooky, creepy feeling that gives you the chills but you can't put it down.
Amelia is a great character most of the time. She does have her moments when you just want to shake her and say listen to yourself. She talks often in the books about the rules her father gave her to live with her ability to see ghosts, yet every time a situation arises she completely disregards the rules and does whatever. Some times this works for her but even when it does it's still just too close.
Asher Falls was a character itself. The whole town is just insane. I think Sidra was the only sane one in the bunch. I wish there had been more of her because her story sounds just as interesting as Amelia's.
I found myself just as torn with Thane as Amelia was. Even knowing what happened in the first book, there was a part of me that still wants Devlin to be her one.
Overall, there were a lot of questions answered in this book while still moving Amelia's story forward. I find I want to not only follow her story, I find myself wanting to stay in Asher Falls for a bit more. I want to know what Thane does to fix the Asher name and what happens with Tilly and Sidra. At the same time, the last line made me anxious to read book three to find out what is going to happen.

Book Review ~ Styxx

Styxx (Dark-Hunter #23)
by Sherrilyn Kenyon
published by St Martin's Press
genre: Adult, Paranormal, PNR,

Summary (Goodreads): Centuries ago Acheron saved the human race by imprisoning an ancient evil bent on absolute destruction. Now that evil has been unleashed and it is out for revenge.

As the twin to Acheron, Styxx hasn’t always been on his brother’s side. They’ve spent more centuries going at each other’s throats than protecting their backs. Now Styxx has a chance to prove his loyalty to his brother, but only if he’s willing to trade his life and future for Acheron’s.

The Atlantean goddess of Wrath and Misery, Bethany was born to right wrongs. But it was never a task she relished. Until now. She owes Acheron a debt that she vows to repay, no matter what it takes. He will join their fellow gods in hell and nothing is going to stop her.

But things are never what they seem, and Acheron is no longer the last of his line. Styxx and Acheron must put aside their past and learn to trust each other or more will suffer.

Yet it’s hard to risk your own life for someone who once tried to take yours, even when it's your own twin, and when loyalties are skewed and no one can be trusted, not even yourself, how do you find a way back from the darkness that wants to consume the entire world? One that wants to start by devouring your very soul?

My Thoughts: I'm not going to cover everything that happens in this review. This is a huge book with a lot going on and even more characters. I also don't want to spoil any of the surprises.
Ms Kenyon has said that you do not need to read Acheron in order to read this book. I can see where that is possible but don't understand why you would want to. Styxx's story is tragic in so many ways but knowing Ash's side of the story just makes it that much more so.
Nick is my favorite but Ash has always been right there at the top. I cannot tell you how many times I wanted someone to knock him upside the head. I understood why he acted how he did in their human lives. They both went through unspeakable things but the fact that he wouldn't listen or look at his brother's side when they were older (much older) just irritated me. I loved when Urian threw it all back in his face and made him see things he didn't want to.
This also changed the way I looked at Ryssa. I was like Styxx and just wanted someone to shut her up. I also felt bad about feeling this way knowing what happens. At least with Acheron it was kind of understandable but she had no excuse other than she was a spoiled princess.
I've had problems with some of the pairings in this series but the romance also worked for me in this book. I liked Beth/Bet'Anya.  The fact that she was/is order to her father's chaos really helped when it came to soothing Styxx's turmoil and giving him moments of peace. I also liked how she wasn't afraid to stand up to Apollo or any of the others when it came to Styxx.
Overall, I was happy with this story. I had no idea that I needed this book in this series considering how many other character's stories I'm waiting for. It was a great read and felt like it happened at the right time. With everything that is going on having one more person (using that loosely) on the good guys side cannot be a bad thing.

Rating: 4.5-5 I couldn't/can't decide
