Book Review ~ The Crimson Crown

The Crimson Crown (Seven Realms #4)

by Cinda Williams Chima
published by Hyperion
genre: YA, Fantasy,

Summary (Goodreads): A thousand years ago, two young lovers were betrayed-Alger Waterlow to his death, and Hanalea, Queen of the Fells, to a life without love.

Now, once again, the Queendom of the Fells seems likely to shatter apart. For young queen Raisa ana'Marianna, maintaining peace even within her own castle walls is nearly impossible; tension between wizards and Clan has reached a fevered pitch. With surrounding kingdoms seeking to prey on the Fells' inner turmoil, Raisa's best hope is to unite her people against a common enemy. But that enemy might be the person with whom she's falling in love.

Through a complicated web of lies and unholy alliances, former streetlord Han Alister has become a member of the Wizard Council of the Fells. Navigating the cut-throat world of blue blood politics has never been more dangerous, and Han seems to inspire hostility among Clan and wizards alike. His only ally is the queen, and despite the perils involved, Han finds it impossible to ignore his feelings for Raisa. Before long, Han finds himself in possession of a secret believed to be lost to history, a discovery powerful enough to unite the people of the Fells. But will the secret die with him before he can use it?

A simple, devastating truth concealed by a thousand-year-old lie at last comes to light in this stunning conclusion to the Seven Realms series.

My Thoughts: I wanted to like this book, I loved the rest of the series, but had to force myself  to even finish it. I originally started this in January 2013 finally finished October 2014. The only reason I picked it back up was to finish the series off.
I think my main problem was Raisa in this book. In previous books she was a strong, intelligent female that you wanted to cheer for. In this one she just felt whiny, indecisive, and too willing to believe everything that is told to her.
I did like getting the full story of "The Breaking" and what really happened to Hanalea and Alger. Parts were predictable but it still added to the current story and helped bring closure to some characters.
The Bayars were still the same manipulative wizards that we have come to know. I wasn't expecting any changes from the dad but it would have been nice if there had been some growth with the two younger ones.
Overall, if I hadn't willed myself to finish this series I'm not sure I would have picked this book up a second time. Han was the one character that seemed to stick to character no matter where others seemed to place him. It was also nice to see some of the younger warriors step up and be accepting of Raisa and Han, and work with wizards to try and to achieve a common goal. I still enjoy Cinda Williams Chima's writing but this book was just not for me.

Armchair BEA 2014 ~ Middle Grade/ Young Adult

Today's prompt: YA/MG: If you do not normally talk about this genre on your site, maybe you want to feature books that you remember impacting you during this stage in your life. If this is where you tend to gravitate, maybe you want to list your favorites, make recommendations based on genres, or feature some titles that you are excited to read coming later this year.

**This was probably my hardest one to think of something for. I read both YA and MG but would not call them my preferred genres. I find if I read a book in either of these I then need to read an adult book next. That being said some of my favorite reads over the years have been either YA or MG.
I originally started reading YA when I was looking for more books by some of my favorite Adult authors. I read Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series and came across her Morganville series when I was looking for more. Myrnin is one of my favorite vampires in any book and I enjoyed the world and characters as a whole. It was the same with Richelle Mead. I read her Georgina Kincaid series and eventually ended up loving her Vampire Academy books.
Some other favorites are: Cinda Williams Chima's Seven Realms and The Heir Chronicles (Goodreads)
Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments (first 3 books) and The Infernal Devises. (Goodreads)
Victoria Schwab's The Archived and The Near Witch (Goodreads)
Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson, The Kane Chronicles, and Heroes of Olympus (Goodreads
Maria V Snyder's Glass series, Insiders series, and Healers series (Goodreads)
Brandon Sanderson's The Rithmatist (Goodreads)
J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series (Goodreads)

I'm sure I could keep going so just going to stop now. Hope everyone had a Great Armchair BEA week!

Book Review ~ The Enchanter Heir

The Enchanter Heir (Heir Chronicles #4)
by Cinda Williams Chima
published by Disney Hyperion
release date: October 1, 2013
genre: YA, Fantasy,

**received e-copy from publisher/netgalley in exchange for honest review.

Summary (Goodreads): They called it the Thorn Hill Massacre—the brutal attack on a once-thriving Weir community. Though Jonah Kinlock lived through it, he did not emerge unscathed: like the other survivors, Jonah possesses unique magical gifts that set him apart from members of the mainline guilds. At seventeen, Jonah has become the deadliest assassin in Nightshade, a global network that hunts the undead. He is being groomed to succeed Gabriel Mandrake, the sorcerer, philanthropist, and ruthless music promoter who established the Thorn Hill Foundation, the public face of Nightshade. More and more, Jonah’s at odds with Gabriel’s tactics and choice of targets. Desperate to help his dying brother Kenzie, Jonah opens doors that Gabriel prefers to keep closed.

Emma Claire Greenwood grew up worlds away, raised by a grandfather who taught her music rather than magic. An unschooled wild child, she runs the streets until the night she finds her grandfather dying, gripping a note warning Emma that she might be in danger. The clue he leaves behind leads Emma into Jonah’s life—and a shared legacy of secrets and lingering questions.

Was Thorn Hill really a peaceful commune? Or was it, as the Wizard Guild claims, a hotbed of underguild terrorists? The Wizards’ suspicions grow when members of the mainline guilds start turning up dead. They blame Madison Moss and the Interguild Council, threatening the fragile peace brokered at Trinity.

Racing against time, Jonah and Emma work to uncover the truth about Thorn Hill, amid growing suspicion that whoever planned the Thorn Hill Massacre might strike again.

My Thoughts: This is one of those instances that I wish this hadn't just been added to the Heir trilogy and had been its own series in the same world. I found myself confused for the first part of the book because I was expecting it to be at least close to the other books. Not the case. While there are some characters that show up, none really have much to do with the story. I found that once I stopped looking at it as a book four and more as a first book, I was able to enjoy the story more.
The characters and their magical abilities is very different than the guilds we are used to from the other stories. This is explained (sort of) by what took place at Thorn Hill. We're told that their wizard stones are different/broken in some way and whatever killed all the adults caused this but that's kind of where it ends.
This was another book that was more story driven for me. There wasn't an individual character that really grabbed me it was more all of them as a whole. Jonah had/has the potential but I found him to be too single minded on most things. There were times that it seemed he was trying to do the right thing but when it came down to it he always went back to one answer for everything. The only thing about Emma was the fact that she is a luthier. We are told that she is this strong street kid and more of a truant but then when it came right down to it she didn't strike me as someone who could take care of herself.
Overall, this was a definite first book in a series. Lots of things were started, wizard deaths, zombie ghosts led by someone named Lilith, magical kids with different abilities than we are used to, but this is all we have. Nothing was really finished. A lot of build up and then an ending that left more questions than answers. All that said, I still enjoyed the book and am looking forward to finding out the answers to the questions.
