What We're Reading

So I finally started The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. Finished The Eye of the World this past weekend. While I enjoyed it overall, it is a long book and there were certain spots/chapters that I felt could have just been skipped. I do have a lot of questions still and will be going on to book two to find out more.

I also squeezed in Saga Vol. 1 this past weekend. I've heard nothing but great things about this graphic novel series. I'm not sure how I feel about it. Right now I don't love it as much as everyone else seems too. I did think the artwork was better than a lot I've seen but the story didn't really grab me. I'll read the next volume at least to see if it interests me more.

Library Haul
I do have several books from the library this week that I'm trying to decide between, I've started Rook
by Sharon Cameron. It's another that hasn't fully grabbed my interest. I find the main character annoying and don't know if I want to invest my time to continue.
I'm also trying to catch back up on some series I started. I have a list going of book 2s that have been out for awhile but I still haven't gotten to. The first I picked up is The Unbound by Victoria Schwab. I grabbed Vicious by this author while I was there.

Some others that I picked up that are more likely to be read are: Eighth Grave After Dark by Darynda Jones (will be caught up on this series), The Stars Never Rise by Rachel Vincent, and The Clockwork Scarab by Colleen Gleason.

Plenty to choose from, now just to settle in and start reading.

Armchair BEA 2014 ~ Middle Grade/ Young Adult

Today's prompt: YA/MG: If you do not normally talk about this genre on your site, maybe you want to feature books that you remember impacting you during this stage in your life. If this is where you tend to gravitate, maybe you want to list your favorites, make recommendations based on genres, or feature some titles that you are excited to read coming later this year.

**This was probably my hardest one to think of something for. I read both YA and MG but would not call them my preferred genres. I find if I read a book in either of these I then need to read an adult book next. That being said some of my favorite reads over the years have been either YA or MG.
I originally started reading YA when I was looking for more books by some of my favorite Adult authors. I read Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series and came across her Morganville series when I was looking for more. Myrnin is one of my favorite vampires in any book and I enjoyed the world and characters as a whole. It was the same with Richelle Mead. I read her Georgina Kincaid series and eventually ended up loving her Vampire Academy books.
Some other favorites are: Cinda Williams Chima's Seven Realms and The Heir Chronicles (Goodreads)
Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments (first 3 books) and The Infernal Devises. (Goodreads)
Victoria Schwab's The Archived and The Near Witch (Goodreads)
Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson, The Kane Chronicles, and Heroes of Olympus (Goodreads
Maria V Snyder's Glass series, Insiders series, and Healers series (Goodreads)
Brandon Sanderson's The Rithmatist (Goodreads)
J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series (Goodreads)

I'm sure I could keep going so just going to stop now. Hope everyone had a Great Armchair BEA week!

2013 Wrap Up Post

I have been setting a reading goal on Goodreads for the past several years of 150. I usually come close but not this year. I ended the year with only 90 books read. I will say while my numbers were down, due to several reading slumps, the majority of my books were 3.5 ratings and above. I was putting a lot of books down and starting new ones instead of forcing myself to read something I wasn't enjoying.

Stats for 2013
First Book Read: The Serpent's Shadow by Rick Riordan
Last Book Read: The Problem Child by Michael Buckley (book)
Welcome to the Jungle by Jim Butcher (graphic novel)
Longest Book: Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Here's a list of all my 4.5-5 star reads this year.

The only challenge I've signed up for so far in 2014 is the Goodreads challenge. Signed up for 150 again. Hoping to either finally beat it or get much closer than this year.

Have a Great and Happy Reading Year in 2014!

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill over at Breaking The Spine. It's a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating.

The Unbound (The Archived #2)
by Victoria Schwab
published by Hyperion
expected release date: January 2014
genre: YA, Fantasy, Paranormal

Summary (Goodreads): Imagine a place where the dead rest on shelves like books. Each body has a story to tell, a life seen in pictures that only Librarians can read. The dead are called Histories, and the vast realm in which they rest is the Archive.

Last summer, Mackenzie Bishop, a Keeper tasked with stopping violent Histories from escaping the Archive, almost lost her life to one. Now, as she starts her junior year at Hyde School, she's struggling to get her life back. But moving on isn't easy -- not when her dreams are haunted by what happened. She knows the past is past, knows it cannot hurt her, but it feels so real, and when her nightmares begin to creep into her waking hours, she starts to wonder if she's really safe.

Meanwhile, people are vanishing without a trace, and the only thing they seem to have in common is Mackenzie. She's sure the Archive knows more than they are letting on, but before she can prove it, she becomes the prime suspect. And unless Mac can track down the real culprit, she'll lose everything, not only her role as Keeper, but her memories, and even her life. Can Mackenzie untangle the mystery before she herself unravels?

**I really enjoyed The Archived and it's uniqueness. Cannot wait to read this one.

Book Review ~ The Archived

The Archived (The Archived #1)
by Victoria Schwab
published by Hyperion
genre: YA, Fantasy,

Summary (Goodreads): Imagine a place where the dead rest on shelves like books.

Each body has a story to tell, a life seen in pictures that only Librarians can read. The dead are called Histories, and the vast realm in which they rest is the Archive.

Da first brought Mackenzie Bishop here four years ago, when she was twelve years old, frightened but determined to prove herself. Now Da is dead, and Mac has grown into what he once was, a ruthless Keeper, tasked with stopping often—violent Histories from waking up and getting out. Because of her job, she lies to the people she loves, and she knows fear for what it is: a useful tool for staying alive.

Being a Keeper isn’t just dangerous—it’s a constant reminder of those Mac has lost. Da’s death was hard enough, but now her little brother is gone too. Mac starts to wonder about the boundary between living and dying, sleeping and waking. In the Archive, the dead must never be disturbed. And yet, someone is deliberately altering Histories, erasing essential chapters. Unless Mac can piece together what remains, the Archive itself might crumble and fall.

My Thoughts: Another enjoyable read from Victoria Schwab. I really liked her first book The Near Witch and I liked this one even more. It was a darker, unique take on what happens after death and those who care for them.
Characters: MacKenzie has been learning to be a keeper since she was very young. I don't often like so many flashbacks during a story but the parts with her Da were some of my favorites. The transition form the lessons she was being taught in the flashback and what was happening in present day were well done.
Wes was another favorite. Some have said he's the love interest but I never felt that. I could see something happening in the future but this not a case where the girl meets boy and loses all sense of self. Wes brought plenty of humour and levity to what could have been a straight dark, emotional book with no let up.
Overall, this is a great enjoyably unique read. One of the better starts to a series in awhile and I look forward to being immersed in this world again.

Rating: 5
