Book Review ~ 13 Curses

13 Curses (Thirteen Treasures #2)
by Michelle Harrison
published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
genre: MG/YA fantasy

Summary (full @Goodreads): The 13 Treasures have become the 13 Curses. When fairies stole her brother, Red vowed to get him back. Now trapped in the fairy realm, she begs to be seen before the fairy court where she strikes a bargain: Her brother in exchange for all thirteen charms from Tanya's bracelet....Can Red, Tanya, and Fabian find all thirteen charms? And if they do, will the fairies keep their promise?

My Thoughts: This story had everything I was waiting for in the first book. More about the fairies, more about the 13 treasures and more Red.
There were times when I thought Red was a little too full of herself but overall I was glad she was the main character in this book. Tanya, Fabian and even Warwick are also important in this.
I liked how the fairies were represented. With the Seelie being "good" and the Unseelie being the uncaring "bad" court. The casting out of the charms and having Red find them before she can get her brother out was an interesting task and I wasn't sure how they were going to go about it.
As I stated, I didn't like Red at times. Especially when she was dealing with Nell, I thought it was just too much. Fabian also had moments in this book that I just wanted to sit him down and tell him to stop acting like a brat. On the flip side, I enjoyed both Tanya and Warwick more in this story. Finding out more of Warwick's back story added to his character.
The biggest complaint was the epilogue. It wasn't needed and had me rolling my eyes while I read it. With everything that came out and was accomplished in this book I'm interested in seeing what the third book is about.

Follow Friday is now hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of course and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it'll allow us to show off more new blogs!

Q. Summer Reading. What was your favorite book that you were REQUIRED to read when you were in school?

A. I honestly don't remember much from high school. The one from then, I'm not sure which it was, was one of the Arthurian tales. I do remember though from 5th grade reading the Narnia books and loving them.

Coming Soon ... Book Trailers

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill over at Breaking The Spine. It's a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating.

The Archived
by Victoria Schwab
published by Disney Hyperion
expected release: January 22, 2012

Summary: Imagine a place where the dead rest on shelves like books.

Each body has a story to tell, a life seen in pictures that only Librarians can read. The dead are called Histories, and the vast realm in which they rest is the Archive. Da first brought Mackenzie Bishop here four years ago, when she was twelve years old, frightened but determined to prove herself. Now Da is dead, and Mac has grown into what he once was: a ruthless Keeper, tasked with stopping often-violent Histories from waking up and getting out. Because of her job, she lies to the people she loves, and she knows fear for what it is: a useful tool for staying alive.

Being a Keeper isn’t just dangerous—it’s a constant reminder of those Mac has lost. Da’s death was hard enough, but now that her little brother is gone too, Mac starts to wonder about the boundary between living and dying, sleeping and waking. In the Archive, the dead must never be disturbed. And yet, someone is deliberately altering Histories, erasing essential chapters. Unless Mac can piece together what remains, the Archive itself might crumble and fall.

In this haunting, richly imagined novel, Victoria Schwab reveals the thin lines between past and present, love and pain, trust and deceit, unbearable loss and hardwon redemption.

**I really enjoyed The Near Witch and cannot wait to read another by this author.

A Little About Me ~ I'm a Disney Geek

I have always been a fan of the Disney Princess and not just because of the movies. I used to have a boxed set of books featuring all their fairytales. My favorite was Sleeping Beauty and it was always the first one I grabbed to read.
While looking through Pinterest (evil time suck) I came across this site Geek Tyrant (love). There were some post on pocket princesses which I recommend but what grabbed me was the following. They titled it Disney Princesses as Fighting Warriors. I see it more as Disney meets Urban Fantasy (one of my fave genres). While Aurora is my favorite princess, she wasn't of this set. That went to Snow White followed closely by Ariel.
Series is done by  DeviantArt artist joshwmc.

I love the darkness of it and the bleeding apple on the front of her shirt. She just looks evil, but in a good way.

I'm not as sure what I like about this one, I just do.

There is just a little about me. Are you a Disney Geek? Do you have a favorite princesses or fairy tale?

NBUs Art, Eats, & What Other

This is a new feature I'm starting where I can talk about just about anything, including books. I will be sharing art/artists that I enjoy as well as some of my favorite recipes. The what other is just that, what ever other thing I can think of to talk about.

Art
Book of Life by David Kracov
Find more info @ DavidKracov.com

Eats
I found this recipe on Pinterest. It was originally posted @Lesley's Recipe Archive.

7-cups unpeeled pickling cucumbers sliced thin (about 7 large dills)
1-cup sliced onions
1-cup sliced green peppers
1-tbsp salt
1-cup white vinegar
2-cups sugar
1-tsp celery seed
1-tsp mustard seed

Mix cucumbers, onions, peppers and salt; set a side
Put vinegar, sugar, celery seed and mustard seed in a pot and bring to a boil
Remove from heat and let cool for one hour
Pour mixture over cucumbers
Put in jars and store in refrigerator
Will keep up to 2 months. Makes 2 quart jars

*I don't like raw onions so did not include in ours but wanted to show original recipe.

What Other
Took the little one to see Ice Age Continental Drift today. I don't think it surpassed Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs for him but he laughed throughout so it was a win. Mom and Dad enjoyed it as well.

Book Review ~ Hunt the Moon

Hunt the Moon (Cassandra Palmer #5)
by Karen Chance
published by Signet Select
genre: Adult, Paranormal

Summary (full @Goodreads): Cassandra Palmer recently defeated a god, which you’d think would buy a girl a little time off. But it doesn’t work that way when your new job description is Pythia—the world’s chief clairvoyant. Cassie is busier than ever, trying to learn about her power, preparing for her upcoming coronation, and figuring out her relationship with the enigmatic sexy master vampire, Mircea...

**I'm going to try and do this without any spoilers. It will be kinda rant filled though.

My Thoughts: It took me a week to read this, which is way to long for this type and size book.
First, as you may know if you've been here before, I hate love triangles. They are my biggest pet peeve in PNR/UF books. They make the storyline chaotic and the heroine(hero) weak because they are unable to make a decision. By the time they do make a decision half the reading audience is going to throw the book across the room because they didn't pick their favorite. I don't see how making half your readers mad at you/your series makes good business sense.
Which leads to this book. I'll be honest, I don't like Pritkin. I'm not on team Mircea either but at least when Cassie is with the vamps she has some kind of backbone. Since she grew up around them she has built up a defense/defiance to them that makes her seem like the kick ass heroine she should be. Whenever she is around Pritkin she just seems to be a weak, jello-ish blah with no backbone. The scenes (even the battle ones) when she was with him are the ones that made me put the book down. She cannot make a decision when she is with him without questioning herself ad nauseam. I also can't get it out of my head that he is half Demon. People seem to forget this. That means he is not as great as everyone thinks and he is hiding a large part of himself from everyone. Just because he says one thing does not mean it's true (he is part demon, who lived in the demon realm for a long time).
Character wise, I think the only one left that I like is Marco. I did like Fred. How can you not like a vampire accountant named Fred. One of the best moments in the book (which is not a good thing). Also, what happened to Billy. He was around for like two sentences in this whole book. Seemed very inconsistent with what we know of these characters.
Story wise, I liked where the author was going. The battle with the children of the Gods, finding out who/what Cassie's mother was (I cannot be the only one that was thinking "this is how I want Cassie to be in this series"), and Cassie finally accepting who she is and the power that goes with it. All of this worked for me. The battle scenes were a little chaotic. I had trouble following the one that took place in Vegas. Kept thinking I missed something.
Overall, I'm torn. Parts worked and others didn't. The ending made me think that we are going to be filled with lots of Pritkin in the next book so I can't say that I'm looking forward to it. I want Cassie to win in the end but I don't really want to see her with either of the men she is with now. I will probably read it but we'll see. This review is way to long so I'll stop now.

Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Jill over at Breaking The Spine. It's a weekly event that spotlights upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating.

Alice in Zombieland (White Rabbit Chronicles #1)
by Gena Showalter
published by Harlequin Teen
genre: YA
expected release date: September 25, 2012

Summary (Goodreads): She won’t rest until she’s sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.

Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that’s all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real….

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn’t careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies….

I wish I could go back and do a thousand things differently.
I'd tell my sister no.
I'd never beg my mother to talk to my dad.
I'd zip my lips and swallow those hateful words.
Or, barring all of that, I'd hug my sister, my mom and my dad one last time.
I'd tell them I love them.
I wish... Yeah, I wish.

**This is a little different for me. I'm not big on zombies or the girls in pretty dresses covers but I love this cover. I'm also intrigued by the whole premise.

Book Review ~ A Game of Thrones ~ part 1

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Fire and Ice #1)
by George R R Martin
published by Bantam
genre: Adult, Fantasy
cover: this is the cover on the copy I got from the library. I'll showcase the others on later parts.

Summary (Full summary available @Goodreads):In A Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin has created a genuine masterpiece, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill the pages of the first volume in an epic series sure to delight fantansy fans everywhere.

In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes of the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom's protective Wall...

**I've decided to do this review in two parts. I've finally reached the halfway point and thought I would share my thoughts so far.

I've found it is harder to avoid spoilers when a book becomes a hit tv show than when it's just an acclaimed book. I tried avoiding but still ended up knowing some things that have not happened yet (I'm a little over 400 pages in) that I wish I didn't know.
The way this book is set up I think I'll take about what characters I like, dislike, and am completely indifferent to.
Likes: Arya. She is my favorite character at this point. She is the kind of princess/lady (training to be) that I like in my fantasy books. She is more sure of herself than her sister and seems to have better sense as well. My favorite chapter was her and the cat and the adventure that led to. Even though it was a small adventure it was still entertaining.
Eddard (I know). His chapters seem to move the story forward the most for me. We also seem to get a lot of info on other charaters when it is his POV.
Indifferent: Jon. I know a lot of people say he is their favorite but at this point he hasn't done anything to warrant it from me. I like him but at the same time don't care. I will say I keep waiting for that something to happen because he always seems to be right on edge of something big. I also like meeting the other blacks from The Wall. The differences between the old and the new guard and the way they think things should be done.
Daenerys (Dany). Another that seems to be well liked. She, like Jon, has had moments that make me think more is coming. When she stood up to her brother my first thought was "Yes". It didn't last long. The other problem I have with her is she seems so separate from everyone else. There is no interaction with the other main characters.
Tyrion. He has some of the most entertaining lines but I'm not sure how I feel about his character. I like him most of the time but then he shows how much he is a Lannister and I have second thoughts.
Dislikes: Sansa. If this girl had a single original thought I think I would fall out of my chair. She is very much the typical senseless girl. I've not seen one thing that made think she can be redeemed. The whole scene with Joffrey, Arya, and the wolf and the follow up "trial" cemented my feelings and it will be hard for her to turn it around.
Richard and Cersei. I know we are supposed to hate the evil queen and all but I'm not find her husband much better. He is way to weak and I find myself wanting to slap him whenever he speaks. She lives up to her evil queen image. She is all about herself and getting as much power as she can no matter the consequences to others.
There are many other characters in this book already but these are the ones that jump out at me. It'll be interesting to see how much my feelings change through the rest of the book and then after watching the first season of the show.
Until next time... Happy Reading!

Follow Friday is now hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of course and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it'll allow us to show off more new blogs!

Q.What drove you to start book blogging in the first place?

A. I've said this before but for me it was the need to vent. I was reading a book by Gena Showalter and really disliked a character. Not the book or the author, just a certain character. Since I didn't have anyone to vent to at home (didn't want to bore hubby) I did a blog post and have been doing so ever since. I haven't vented as much but my reviews tend to run more towards commentary than professional observations.

NBUs ... What Other ~ The Hobbit

This is a new feature I'm starting where I can talk about just about anything, including books. I will be sharing art/artists that I enjoy as well as some of my favorite recipes. The what other is just that, what ever other thing I can think of to talk about.

Today is another What Other day. I have been looking forward to The Hobbit since The Lord of The Rings movies came out and it was just a whisper of talk. These were also the only movies my and hubby had to see in theaters instead of waiting for them to come out on DVD (now it's mostly animated movies with the little one).
The official The Hobbit Blog has a lot of great stuff about the movies and the making of them. Another great site for great info is The One Ring.net.

One of my favorite characters of both the books and the movies is Gandalf and he is featured on the Comic Con poster.

Anyone else looking forward to this movie? If not what movie are you waiting for?

Book Review ~ 13 Treasures

13 Treasures (Thirteen Treasures #1)
by Michelle Harrison
published by Little, Brown books for young readers
genre: Middle Grade

Summary (Goodreads): Tanya is no ordinary girl. She can see fairies. But not the fairies we imagine. Evil fairies who cast spells on her, rousing her from her sleep and propelling her out of bed. At wit's end with her daughter's inexplicable behavior, Tanya's mother sends her away to live with her grandmother at Elvesden Manor, a secluded countryside mansion on the outskirts of a peculiar Essex town.

There is plenty to explore, as long as Tanya stays away from Hangman's Wood- a vast stretch of forest, full of catacombs and notorious for people losing their lives. Fifty years ago a girl vanished in the woods, a girl Tanya's grandmother will not speak of. As Tanya learns more about this girl, she finds herself dangerously close to vanishing into the fairy realm forever.

My Thoughts: There was plenty to enjoy in this story.  From the fairies (all kinds) to characters that could stand up on their own against whatever was going on. Some were more memorable than others. My favorite in this story was Red (main character from book 2) she seemed to be everything Tanya wanted to be. While Tanya was on her way, she wasn't quite there yet. Tanya's defining moment, for me, was when she took the time to bury the fairy that was killed on her gramdmother's windshield. Even with all the mischief and trouble the fairie's had done to  and caused her, she still felt it was important enough to do.
This story delves into the dark side of fairy tales. From changelings, blood pacts gone wrong, to the Seelie and Unseelie we get a glimpse  of it all. The sacrifices made not only by Tanya's grandmother but also by Red to protect Tanya made the story what it is.
Overall, the only thing missing for me was the 13 treasures. While we find out what they are and what they are for, I kept waiting for them to play a part in the story. The story stood on its own and was an enjoyable read but based on the title I kept waiting for more.

Follow Friday

Follow Friday is now hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of course and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it'll allow us to show off more new blogs!

Q: Jumping Genres: Ever pick up a book from a genre you usually don’t like and LOVE it? Tell us about it and why you picked it up in the first place.

A. I now read just about anything as long as I enjoy it so I don't have a specific for this ? but... Some years ago I was only really reading mysteries/crime novel type books. I was reading J.D. Robb's In Death books (I did not consider them sci-fi/futuristic) and saw Nora Roberts name. I decided to find out more and picked up Dance Upon the Air (more specific than I thought when I started)and I've been hooked on PNR/ Urban Fantasy etc since.

Happy Reading and Hopping!

NBUs Art, Eats, & What Other...

This is a new feature I'm starting where I can talk about just about anything, including books. I will be sharing art/artists that I enjoy as well as some of my favorite recipes. The what other is just that, what ever other thing I can think of to talk about.

Today is a What Other day! I'm in a reading slump.

Now lets clarify, I'm not having any problems reading. I still read everyday. I just find myself having trouble finding books that I enjoy. The new books I've been reading haven't been bad. Most have been rather good. It's more I feel like I'm reading them just to say I've read them rather than because I want to.
Has anyone had this problem? I'm not sure how to fix it except to just keep reading until I find that one book that turns it around.
I've started rereading old series lately as well. Current series that I've already read and am reading again include... Mercy Thompson series from Patricia Briggs, Riley Jenson Guardian series from Keri Arthur, Dark Hunters by Sherrilyn Kenyon, and Otherworld/ Sisters of the Moon from Yasmine Galenorn. Reading these series may be the only thing keeping me reading. I know going in that I enjoy them so there's no risk there.
Hopefully things turn around. I've got some books in from the library that I've been waiting for so fingers crossed. Until then I'll have to come up with some books to review or something else to post about :)

Happy Reading and Have a Great Week Everyone!!

Book Review ~ Kushiel's Chosen

Kushiel's Chosen (Kushiel's Legacy #2)
by Jacqueline Carey
published by Tor
genre: Adult, Fantasy

Summary (full @Goodreads)Mighty Kushiel, of rod and weal
Late of the brazen portals
With blood-tipp'd dart a wound unhealed
Pricks the eyen of chosen mortals
...The hands of the gods weigh heavily upon Phèdre's brow, and they are not finished with her. While the young queen who sits upon the throne is well loved by the people, there are those who believe another should wear the crown... and those who escaped the wrath of the mighty are not yet done with their schemes for power and revenge.

My Thoughts: It took some time for me to get into this one. While I don't object to sex in books, it needs to serve a purpose. I felt the first part of the book, when Phedre and crew return to the city, was without purpose. Delauney had a reason behind each patron taken in the first book. In this book it seemed like Phedre was hoping to stumble upon a reason as she was with the patron rather than having a reason beforehand. I found it mostly uninteresting.  It did, in part, help create some of the tension between Phedre and Jocelin.
The Yeshuites and their journey/prophecy served a purpose later in the story but again not something I was interested in.
Once the group was on the road and the real journey began I became more invested in the book. It had everything you could want in an epic fantasy adventure. I will say the pirates were probably my favorite in this story.
Overall there was more I liked than disliked in this book. Phedre once again proved that if there trouble to be found she will be in the middle of it and Jocelin will be beside her trying to save the day. I am torn on the ending. I'm over Melisande and was really hoping that someone would just kill her already. No matter what the author tells us, I don't find her to be this great game player that everyone fears. The fact that she is sitting in plush surroundings claiming sanctuary means she will be back. I just want the story to move forward but it seems stuck as long as she is around.
