This Week's Reads

I've been having a really good reading month. Hoping it sticks around.

Cursed by Benedict Jacka
Alex Verus #2 (Goodreads)
**I read Fated (book 1) in a day and had to grab the next two immediately. It reminds my of Butcher's Dresden series. It has that gritty, dark feel to it.

Rise of the Wolf by Jennifer A Nielsen
Mark of the Thief #2 (Goodreads)
**There were things I like and disliked about the first book. This sounds good but will be the last one I read of the group.

Passenger by Alexandra Bracken
Passenger #1 (Goodreads)
**This was one on my 2016 wants list. I've tried to avoid spoilery reviews so hoping it is as good as it looks.

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard
The Witchlands #1 (Goodreads)
**I love witches and magic, have always enjoyed books that revolve around these subjects. I've seen good things about this one.

Some Thursday Randomness

Saw this table on Colossal (website). At this time with a ten year old boy I could never have a table like this but I love the whimsy of it.
Up Balloon Coffee Table
by Duffy London (website)
Epic Reads did a column on beautiful end papers in books. I always love when there are detailed, well done maps in fantasy books. From the list they showed the end papers for Fairest by Marissa Meyer was my favorite.

I'm probably just missing them but I haven't seen as many book trailers lately. Liked the artwork in this one. Mark of the Thief by Jennifer A. Nielsen

Book Review ~ The False Prince

The False Prince (The Ascendance Trilogy #1)
by Jennifer A Neilsen
published by Scholastic
genre: YA

Summary (full summary @Goodreads) THE FALSE PRINCE is the thrilling first book in a brand-new trilogy filled with danger and deceit and hidden identities that will have readers rushing breathlessly to the end.

My Thoughts: I was not as enamored with this book as others seem to have been. If it hadn't been for the flip and reveal of the real prince I would have given this a much lower rating.
I did not care for any of the orphans or for Conner and his men. None of the boys seemed to have a likable quality between them. I cannot recall one point where I felt one should win out above the others.
There were only two people that I liked. Mott for his loyalty to his country and truly believing he was doing the right thing. Then doing the right thing when he could. Also, Amarinda the betrothed to the throne. She was the only one I truly felt sorry for in this book. From the time we met her she seemed to genuinely care for her prince while getting caught in the middle of all the different schemes.
While the reveal kept me reading this book I do not know that it will keep me in the trilogy. I will have to wait and see what the next book is about before deciding.

Rating: 3.5
