Book Review ~ Nightshade

Nightshade
By Andrea Cremer
Published By Philomel

Summary (Goodreads): Calla Tor has always known her destiny: After graduating from the Mountain School, she'll be the mate of sexy alpha wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and guarding sacred sites for the Keepers. But when she violates her masters' laws by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the world she has known. By following her heart, she might lose everything— including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?

Dislikes: I'm not the biggest Shay fan, nothing in particular, he's just kinda of  eh to me.  I've posted before how I dislike when teen girl instantly falls for teen boy from first glance and that happened in this book. I'm also finding I'm over all the love triangles, can't we have a teen angst romance without adding a third person.  Calla the alpha. I had trouble believing her in this role, especially when she seemed to know nothing about her pack or what was going on with them.  At times they seemed to be humoring her more than following her, especially once the two packs were mixed together.

Likes:  Calla the individual. I really enjoyed her growth from someone who just follows orders without question and accepted the role she had been given to someone who started to think for herself.  I liked most of the side characters, guardians and keepers,  and their interactions with each other throughout the story.  While some interactions were disturbing you got a sense of the power structure and who was really in charge.

Overall: This was a great read from beginning to end. The action started right from the first page and didn't stop until the last. The world and history that Ms. Cremer built for the Guardians and Keepers was unique and interesting.  While the ending didn't help my feelings about Shay, it did make me anxious to read Wolfsbane to find out what happens next, who lives through the decisions Calla made, and which Wolf (if any) comes out on top.

  1. Really nice review Kristina, I like how you split Calla into Calla the Alpha and Calla the individual as I had trouble with her as alpha as well but loved her overall. I'm definitely leaning more toward Ren over Shay, but I can't wait to see what happens with all of them in Wolfsbane!
